CREW community garden planning

CREW, Inc. had a planning session to discuss installing and maintenance of our community garden.

CREW has been awarded a grant from the SMH Foundation for a community garden.

The SMH Foundation raises funds to support SMH in improving the health of the community. One of those efforts includes ensuring fresh, quality food is available to support the nutritional needs of our patients. Modeling a similar effort this is grant funded in Page County. Effective community gardens are a model partnership between hospitals and community in supporting food security and promoting healthy eating habits.

CREW had a Community Garden kickoff meeting with advice and input from some of the members of the community as well as: Travis Clark from Valley Health; Megan Gordan, Program Director, from Page Alliance for Community Action; Allyson Ponn from Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District

Collectively we surveyed the space and envisioned where the gardens would be.  Our next steps are site visits to other community gardens and planning.  We welcome groups and individuals who would like to volunteer as this initiative develops.  We are hopeful to have our first small harvest by late Fall and see what we learned in order to have a successful planting for next year.

Thanks again to Coffee to Grow for the delicious chicken and veggie lunch, iced coffees and gorgeous fruit parfaits. Stay tuned as we begin our growing journey!
